WHAT ARE THE MINIMUM MOTORCYCLE INSURANCE REQUIREMENTS IN ILLINOIS?

In Illinois, all motorcycle riders are required by law to carry minimum liability insurance to operate their motorcycle legally on public roads. As per the most recent state guidelines, the mandatory liability coverage limits for motorcycles in Illinois are:

  • Bodily injury coverage of $25,000 per person

  • Bodily injury coverage of $50,000 per accident

  • Property damage coverage of $20,000 per accident

This is commonly referred to as 25/50/20 coverage. In Illinois, you also need Uninsured Motorist Bodily Injury (UMBI) coverage with the same 25/50 minimums, which protects you if you get injured in an incident caused by a driver without any insurance.

In Illinois, carrying proof of motorcycle insurance is not just a good idea - it's the law. All riders must be able to show valid proof of insurance any time they're operating their motorcycle on public roads.

Acceptable forms of proof include:

  • An insurance ID card issued by your provider - physical or digital

  • A printed declaration page from your policy

  • An electronic version on your phone - a PDF or via your insurance provider's app

  • A binder or temporary insurance card if your policy is new

Note that failure to show proof of insurance on the spot can result in fines or penalties - even if you're actually insured - so it's a good idea to keep it easily accessible.

Uninsured and Underinsured Motorist Bodily Injury Coverage

This coverage can help pay for medical expenses if you’re injured in a motorcycle accident caused by a driver who has little or no insurance.

Illinois law requires all policies to include Uninsured Bodily Injury coverage at a minimum limit of $25,000 per person / $50,000 per accident. At these required limits, coverage only applies when the at-fault driver has no insurance. Choosing higher limits has its advantages. If you choose higher limits, Underinsured Bodily Injury coverage is also provided. This protection applies when the at‑fault driver has insurance, but their policy limits are lower than yours and are not sufficient to cover your injuries.
