WHAT IS A SPORT BIKE?

A sport bike is a type of motorcycle designed and optimized for acceleration, speed, cornering, and braking with asphalt and concrete roads or race tracks in mind.

Out of all road-legal motorcycles available, sport bikes are considered the fastest. They tend to be made with lightweight frames, typically aluminum and other lightweight materials. This boosts their side-to-side maneuverability.

Although most sport bike manufacturers concentrate on high speeds and fast acceleration, some sub-categories of sports motorcycles are available. A good example here is sport touring bikes, which are designed for longer trips.

DO YOU NEED TO INSURE YOUR SPORT BIKE?

The short answer to this question is YES. While insurance laws change depending on your state, most have a legal requirement to take out liability insurance to operate your sport bike lawfully on the road.

At Harley-Davidson® Insurance Services, we’ll match you with the appropriate insurance coverage based on your sport bike and the legal requirements in your state, so you have  peace of mind.

Liability Coverage Is The Bare Minimum Requirement In Most States

Liability insurance is designed to provide you financial protection if your sport bike causes damage to another person or their vehicle. This is the basic minimum insurance you’re required to have in most states.

However, the extent of coverage will be subject to the policy limits vs. the amount of damage.

It’s well worth considering a more inclusive plan so that you may be insured if an unexpected incident happens. There are many ways to add extra protection from theft and collision to medical payment coverage.

DIFFERENT TYPES OF SPORT BIKE INSURANCE COVERAGE

With Harley-Davidson® Insurance, we have made it easy to find the right sport bike insurance plan for you, as we have a broad range of coverages and add-ons available. Some of our most popular options include:

BIKE REPLACEMENT COST

You can benefit from Replacement Cost coverage if your sports bike is beyond repair and deemed a total loss. While many firms only offer replacement costs based on depreciation, this coverage will replace your bike at its full value.

This coverage is available when your motorcycle has not been previously owned at the time of your purchase and is a current model year or one year older than that.

COMPREHENSIVE COVERAGE

Comprehensive coverages ensures protection for damage to your bike from a wide range of causes including vandalism, fire, and theft.

ACCESSORIES INSURANCE COVERAGE

Accessories coverage protects custom or additional parts and accessories added to a motorcycle that are not factory standard as defined by the VIN (Vehicle Identification Number).

This protects against damage or theft and covers the cost of repair or replacement without requiring the policyholder to bear the full financial burden themselves.

Some insurance companies may title this accessories coverage "Optional Equipment."

FULL COST OPTIONAL EQUIPMENT REPLACEMENT

Customizing your sport bike to add value differs from personalizing it for comfort. Optional Equipment Replacement coverage provides financial protection from the cost of damaged optional equipment added to a motorcycle, including high-performance parts, chrome accents, and aftermarket exhaust systems.

If the equipment is damaged or destroyed in the same event that results in the motorcycle being a total loss, the policyholder will receive full compensation to replace it.

HOW MUCH WILL IT COST TO INSURE YOUR SPORT BIKE?

The cost of your insurance policy will differ based on the type of sport bike you ride and several other factors.

Factors Influencing Sport Bike Insurance Cost

  • Bike type - The make, model, and type of sport motorcycle you have may impact your insurance cost. The age of your bike also plays a role.

  • Your location - Where you reside will have an impact on your motorcycle cost as well.

  • Coverage type - The degree of coverage and options you select will influence the cost. The more coverage you have, your sport bike insurance may be more expensive.

  • Gender and age - Your quote may also be impacted by the amount of experience you have on the roads - which typically increases with age. According to data from J.D. Power, there’s reason to believe that gender can also have an impact.

  • Your driving record - If you have any driving violations and/or accidents on your record, this may influence your motorcycle insurance quote.

TIPS WHEN TAKING OUT SPORT BIKE INSURANCE

Before you take out your sport motorcycle insurance plan, we’ve got a few tips to help you find the appropriate policy for your needs:

  1. Pay annually instead of per month - While paying every month is tempting, we’d recommend paying in full for the year if you can afford it. Many insurance providers offer discounts for those who pay up front.

  2. Disclose any modifications you’ve made - If you have modified or enhanced your bike’s engine or any other elements of your bike, it should be disclosed during the quote process.

  3. Have all the relevant information about your bike ready - Make sure you have all the details about the make, model, year, and modifications relating to your bike. This will ensure you receive an accurate quote.

  4. Discover whether you qualify for any insurance discounts - From taking a safety course to being eligible for a military discount, there are numerous ways to reduce insurance costs.

Mistakes To Avoid When Selecting Sport Bike Insurance

If you’re looking for a sport bike insurance plan, here are four things to avoid:

  • Lying on your insurance application - Even a little white lie could cost you a lot of money in the long run. After all, if you're found to be untruthful, your entire policy could become invalid.

  • Choosing a high deductible rate - Your deductible determines how much you pay before insurance kicks in. A high deductible can lead to financial strain in the event of an incident.

  • Going for the cheapest insurance plan you can find - The most affordable policy may not provide sufficient coverage. This could cost you a lot more in the long run if you’re involved in an incident, and your plan doesn’t pay out when needed.

  • Allowing your current sport bike insurance plan to expire - We recommend looking for a new policy at least a month before your current one ends. This is especially true as you could be committing an offense if you have a bike with an expired insurance plan. Plus, depending on your location, you could lose your Claim Free renewal discount if your policy has lapsed for an extended time.

Myths About Sport Bike Insurance

Sadly, there is a lot of misinformation on the Internet about sport bikes and their available insurance options. Let’s clear up some of the most common myths.

  • Myth 1 - Your car insurance will cover your sports motorcycle.

  • Myth 2 - Minimum liability insurance is all you need to cover all possibilities.

  • Myth 3 - Your driving record will not influence your sports bike insurance quote.

  • Myth 4 - The color of your sport motorcycle will influence your insurance quote.

  • Myth 5 - If you put your sport bike away during the winter months, you should cancel your insurance plan.

These are just some of the common myths out there about sport bike insurance. We're here to help. For any questions on sport bike insurance, reach out to the Harley-Davidson® Insurance team.
